Carey Blanton, born a slave around 1838, died a Freedman in Eagle Lake, Colorado County, Texas on 22 August 1891. Since he lived decades before my time, it's good to know those in his community considered him to be honest and faithful, despite defaming him by calling him an "industrious darky" which was so typical of southern whites in 1891 and for some in the year 2011 too! But despite the derogatory reference to his physical features, there is no doubt in my mind that he was a man of "good moral character" and would be missed by those who genuinely respected him in the Eagle Lake, Texas community.
